Almost everyone who has ever typed text using a computer keyboard has wondered why the letters are arranged in that specific order and not otherwise, and also why the letters F and J have small bumps. Let`s not delay and get to the point to find out why the letter layout is exactly like that and, most importantly, why the letters F and J have those bumps.

First, let`s clarify the first part of our question. It turns out that the letter sequence on the keyboard is designed specifically to make our typing easier, increasing the typing speed. Initially, it might seem that letters should be arranged in alphabetical order, but this layout would not be practical. In the modern keyboard layout, the most frequently used letters of the alphabet are located in the center.
Keyboard designers have also strived to arrange letters so that the most common letter combinations are adjacent. This significantly increases typing speed, so the most experienced keyboard users can type around 300 characters per minute or more.

The keyboard layout helps to enter text faster, but initially, this layout had much more practical considerations. The origins of keyboards date back to the 19th century, when typewriters were used for writing. The initial letter layout was different, but user experience and suggestions placed them in the right places. At first, many frequently used letters were on the edges of the typewriter keyboard, which often led to the mechanism breaking, so the more frequently used letters were moved closer to the center, thereby extending the typewriter`s lifespan.
Now, it remains to find out the true meaning of the bumps. Experienced typists type texts using both hands, with the index fingers positioned on the letters F and J. For people who regularly use the keyboard, typing becomes easier, and long texts can be typed almost without looking at the keyboard, but human hands tend to `get lost` in space, and that`s why there are these bumps on the keyboard letters F and J, which help to quickly find the correct hand position.

It might seem that the keyboard is the simplest complex computer component, but the keyboard is also a finely thought-out instrument for controlling the computer itself.
