I work as a TELE 2 operator. Every day, various people call me with different problems. Someone has something not working, someone can`t top up credit, someone just calls and stays silent... On average, about 300 subscribers call me per day, that`s about 7500 people a month. But there was one call that I might never forget.
It was already late evening, I was in a good mood, a man about 50 years old called me.
– Company TELE 2, blah blah blah...
– Good evening, could you please check when the last call was made from this number?
– I checked the documents, I see that the SIM card hasn`t been used for a few months. I thought to warn that if the SIM card isn`t used for 180 days, it will be blocked.
– He interrupted me: Yes, yes, I know that. This number belongs to my wife. The thing is, she died two months ago... At the funeral, I placed the phone next to her. And every evening around 9:00 PM, I call her. But tonight, when calling her, I heard: The phone you are calling is switched off or out of coverage area. Probably the battery died. I wanted to ask you not to block the SIM card, I don`t want to hear someone else pick up when calling this number. I want this phone to always be next to her, because I gave it to her. I want to call her every evening in the hope of hearing her voice.
He started crying, chills ran through my whole body and there was a lump in my throat. But I had to explain to him that from that SIM card, you need to make at least one call or send an SMS, no matter how stupid it sounds. I didn`t know what to do, what to say. I understood that, damn it, I can`t help him in any way. I started to comfort him: I understand you, I`m really sorry.
– Don`t think I`m crazy, I just love her very much...
He hung up, tears were in my eyes, I didn`t know what to do. There was a queue of 30 people on the line, but I sat and cried...
It makes you think about how strong love can be, even realizing that nothing can be changed or fixed anymore, a person calls the number for the hundredth time and still hopes for something... Hopes to maybe hear a voice dear and close to the heart.
Before speaking, ask yourself if the words you are about to say are true, kind, necessary, and if they will help someone. If the answer is no, maybe it`s better to leave them unsaid.
