This story is one of those that prove there are still people in the world who can love and wait for decades no matter what. If someone told you about it, youd probably not believe it. Who would wait 70 years for a guy who disappeared once and never returned to his beloved? But there are such women.
It happened in Texas, USA, back in 1944. Young Peggy fell in love with handsome pilot Bill Harris and, of course, it was love at first sight. Soon the young couple got married. Unfortunately, happiness was short-lived: after 6 weeks Harris was called to the front. They saw each other for the last time at the airfield from where Bill left for France...

Bad news reached the heartbroken Peggy just a few days later: after arriving at the location and the first battles, the guy went missing without a trace. No one knew where he was. Since Bill's death was not confirmed, the young woman hoped he was alive and continued to wait. But pilot Harris never returned...
After an unimaginably long 70 years, one of Peggy's relatives unexpectedly found an archive record mentioning Bill. It was about an airplane shot down over Normandy near the small town of Levente – piloted by American aviator Harris. Unfortunately, the pilot did not survive and was buried in the local cemetery.
Peggy no longer had doubts – her husband had perished. To pay the last tribute to his memory, she went to France to Bill's grave. How great was her surprise when she learned that pilot Harris is remembered here as a hero! In the small town of Levente he became a symbol of self-sacrifice: the main street is named after him, where a Victory parade takes place every year, and his grave is always covered with flowers.
According to the townspeople's version, the plane was shot down directly over the town and began to fall. Pilot Harris had a choice: eject and let the burning machine crash on the town or sacrifice himself and try to steer the plane aside. He chose the second option. Astonished eyewitnesses watched as the engine roared for the last time and the burning fighter crashed into the forest...
Bill Harris was posthumously awarded a medal for bravery and fearlessness, but Peggy has visited her husband's grave every year since then. In the small town of Levente, there is still one living witness to those events – Guy Surlov, so the American pilot's heroic deed is remembered to this day.
Peggy waited for Bill her entire life, never remarrying. It must have been very painful in the sunset of life to learn such truth. The only consolation is pride in her husband who did everything he could so that no peaceful resident would suffer. By the way, the French guard Peggy like the apple of their eye, because she is also part of this heroic deed.
