Have you ever wondered how cranberries are harvested? They are very tiny berries that grow right at the ground. Picking them is pure torture! By the time you fill a basket with berries, your back is stiff and your arms and legs are falling off from fatigue.

Photo: ofigenno.com The fields where cranberries are grown resemble rice plantations in some way. They are surrounded on all sides by sand embankments, which securely hold water inside the check if necessary.  Photo: ofigenno.com When cranberries start to ripen, small voids form in them. Thanks to this, the berries become lighter than water and float on the surface. To harvest the crop, the check is flooded up to 50 cm, then the water is churned with a special combine. Photo: ofigenno.com After this procedure, the ripe berries detach from the stems and float to the surface.  Photo: ofigenno.com The floating cranberry berries are herded into one corner of the check with a trawl, from where clean and washed cranberries are simply scooped out!  Photo: ofigenno.com However, not all berries are collected this way. Elite class cranberries are picked by hand as before. Berries picked this way last longer, but the labor costs are enormous – harvesting one hectare requires hiring 60 workers. The majority of these berries are harvested mechanically.
