Although the number of people who attend church every Sunday is decreasing, most consider themselves if not religious, then believers.
I don`t want to delve into the jungles of religion, lest, God forbid, I offend the feelings of deeply religious people, but today we decided to raise a question that seemed interesting to us. By the way, not all editors knew the answer to this question.
So: why do Orthodox Christians cross from right to left, but Catholics – from left to right?
Continuation of the article

Well, you see, Catholics until 1570 were allowed to cross themselves both from right to left and from left to right. After that, Pope Pius V insisted that it be done from left to right and no other way.
The thing is, when you move your hand in that way, according to Christian symbolism, the sign of the cross comes from the person who is addressing God. But with the hand movement from right to left – it comes from God, who blesses the person.
Note: it`s not for nothing that Orthodox and Catholic priests cross those around them from left to right (looking from themselves). This is a kind of blessing gesture.
By the way, what`s interesting is that the hand movement from left to right means the transition from sin to salvation, since the left side in Christianity is associated with devilish power, and the right – with divine. But with the sign of the cross from right to left, the hand movement is interpreted as divine victory over the devilish. There you go!
