Turning to a church servant, you can always get a direct answer to this question. It is not permissible for the church to take the people mentioned below as godfather and godmother!

Who should not be taken as godparents

1. You should not take a girl younger than 14 as godmother, a boy younger than 15 as godfather. Upon reaching this age, one can turn to spiritual upbringing, the church believes.

2. Monks and nuns should not be taken as godparents under any circumstances.

3. People with mental illnesses should not be taken as godparents.

4. It is forbidden to invite a man and a woman who are married as godparents. The church prohibits godparents from marrying.

5. The child`s parents should not be godparents.

Who can be taken as godparents contrary to superstition

1. It is believed among people that an unmarried woman should not be taken as godmother for a girl, and an unmarried man as godfather for a boy. They will take away happiness, take everything for themselves!

Of course, this is a silly superstition. The church does not take it seriously, as it has no Christian origin and supports such a choice of godparents. The main thing is that the people are good!

2. Another superstition – about women in position, who should not be taken as godmother.

The church does not prohibit it! The only moment that may cause concern: whether it will be comfortable for the godmother to stand through the entire baptism, whether she will have enough strength. Mostly it depends on the woman`s health condition and the stage of pregnancy.

What is selfless love, how to recognize the boundary between good and evil, what is faith, conscience, patience and mercy: spiritual parents tell the godchild about all this in every meeting. That is their main gift!

It is difficult to understand and accept such a statement. It is customary for us to bring money, toys to the godchild`s home, to spend time with the child solemnly. That is great, of course! However, many forget that godparents are first and foremost spiritual teachers.

It is so complicated for a young, immature soul in the world! To avoid mistakes in youth, to become a successful adult and then regret nothing, one needs to receive proper spiritual and moral upbringing in childhood.

The child`s baptism ritual is performed once. Under no circumstances should the child be rebaptized, no matter what happens! The church prohibits conducting this holy ritual a second time. Whatever godparents the parents choose for the child, they remain for life.
