It seems that this UAE pearl has long been viewed from all possible angles, but that is not true. You just need to know where to look and what to explore. This has been proven by the Belgian-born photographer Nick Hannes. He managed to capture stunning pictures in this unusual city, thanks to sharp vision and undeniable professionalism.

Nick felt the megacity and showed us his memories and impressions, reflecting it all in enchanting photos. For his work, which he named ”Bread and Circuses”, the photographer received the Magnum Awards 2017 prize.
The author says about his works: ”Dubai is a fascinating and contradictory city. I perceive it as an outstanding miracle of globalization and capitalism. I do not claim that my opinion is correct, I just open the eyes of the viewers, and they themselves see what they want or can see.”
”The incredible transformations that have happened to the stuffy fishing town delight not only the city`s admirers but also its haters. The unnoticeable workers` town of the 60s is no longer recognizable, because now Dubai is a modern and developed megacity,” comments Hannes.
90% of Dubai`s residents are labor migrants. While they barely make ends meet, the rich relax on their yachts, visit clubs, and change cars every day.
In Dubai, you can find copies of almost any world artwork. This city is the most suitable entertainment place for wealthy people.
On a global level, the UAE is an island of stability in the unstable Middle East sea. It is like an oasis in a dry desert.
”In these photographs, I do not express my opinion about the country, but try to draw attention to the state`s economy, the inequality of residents, and the greed of some people,” claims the photographer.
Nick`s captured photos have notes of surrealism. It seems like some other reality where everyone is happy and smiling.
Hannes was in Dubai in 2016 and 2017. He was so impressed by this city that he decided to share what he saw with others.

Its contradictions and grandeur should be seen by others too. The author tried to reflect this in his works.
