Science doesn`t stand still; every day researchers conduct thousands of studies and experiments in various fields of human knowledge. You never know what result you might get in the end and what impact it will have.
One of the current topics right now is intelligence, and countless studies have already been done that allow evaluating a person`s intellect even by their appearance. It seems like these things shouldn`t be related, but scientists think otherwise.
Here are 12 quite unexpected conclusions about what influences intelligence and what can demonstrate its level.
Continuation of the article
Loneliness.
Research by Norman Li and Satoshi Kanazawa showed that smart people prefer to be alone. Loud companies are not necessary to have a good time, but socializing more often brings not joy but fatigue. Despite this, intellectual personalities often love spending time by themselves.
Reading
British researchers Stuart J. Ritchie, Timothy C. Bates, and Robert Plomin discovered that reading makes children smarter. Smart children learn to read early in childhood, and later books expand the child`s horizons. But this is only if the child reads various books, not sticking to one genre or author.
Age
Scientists from the University of Edinburgh proved that statistically the oldest child in the family has a higher IQ. On average, this advantage is only 3 points. It`s not related to biology or genetics, but to psychology. More precisely, to how parents interact with children.
Height
Scientists from Princeton University Anne Case and Christina Paxson proved that taller children get higher scores on various tests, and later earn significantly more money. This appears already in early childhood. Three-year-olds who grow faster than their peers show higher results in intelligence tests.
Music
Researcher Glenn Schellenberg showed that children who engage in vocals or play keyboard instruments show higher IQ than those who attend theater clubs or do nothing at all. Although later Schellenberg stated that it is intelligence that leads to engaging in music.
Obesity
A 2006 study showed that people with a higher than average body mass index have lower intelligence levels than those who are thin. Led by French Maxime Cournot, they observed 2200 respondents and concluded that a good figure and intelligence are related.
Sports
People who choose a calmer way to spend their time or intellectual work instead of sports have higher IQ. Such people prefer knowledge that requires patience and work.
Eye color.
Professor Joanna Rowe from the University of Louisville discovered that people with light eyes are smarter than those with dark eyes. But on the other hand, such people have much worse reactions, especially in situations that require urgent solutions.
Sensitivity to sounds.
People with high IQ are easily distracted by ordinary everyday sounds. Door creaking, loud breathing, tire noise – all this can seriously disturb a person with high intelligence. Researchers from the University of Helsinki found an explanation for this.
Finger length.
Norwegian medic Carl Pinsk discovered that the longer a person`s ring finger, the better they are at mathematics and spatial thinking, but worse at verbal tasks. And according to John Coates` investigations, if this finger is longer, there is a greater chance of earning more.
Pessimism.
Psychologists Orgad Tal and Tsachi Ein-Dor from Israel discovered that smart people are often pessimists and tend to imagine the worst situations that could happen to them in their heads.
Swear words
Although it`s considered that swearing with rude words is done by lower-level inhabitants, psychologists from Marist College proved the opposite. They believe that this proves a person has a huge vocabulary, including swear words, and is able to choose the best words in the necessary situation.
Now you can, by looking around, identify potential geniuses or simply smart people. Although it seems strange that a person`s appearance and intelligence can be somehow related. Yes, science is an interesting thing.
