Heimlich maneuver for infants.

One of the most important basic principles in first aid is knowing when to apply the Heimlich maneuver.
According to WebMD ”If the baby can cough or make sounds let him or her cough to try to get the obstructing object out.”

The Heimlich maneuver is intended for babies who cannot cough make sounds or breathe.

Start by laying the baby face down on your forearms. Lower the baby`s head slightly below their chest and support your arms against your thighs.

Use your palm to hold the baby`s head but make sure the mouth is not covered.
Find the point between the baby`s shoulder blades. Perform five sharp fairly strong blows to this point.
If that does not work turn the baby over hold them between your upper arms and forearms.

Perform five sharp thrusts to the chest using two or three fingers.

Perform both of these maneuvers one after the other until the baby can breathe again.

If the child loses consciousness immediately call emergency services at 113 and perform artificial respiration and heart massage.

According to Parenting.com the time to apply the Heimlich maneuver is if ”the child is choking on an object and cannot breathe (or can only take irregular high-frequency gasps”.

The Heimlich maneuver for children older than 1 year the US National Library of Medicine describes as the 5 and 5 method (5 blows between the shoulder blades and 5 abdominal thrusts).

Hold the child face down parallel to the floor - five fairly strong blows between the shoulder blades.
With the 5 and 5 method if the object has not cleared the airways from the back blows then continue with abdominal thrusts.
Start by kneeling behind the child and wrapping your arms around their waist.
Place your fist just above the child`s navel with the thumb down and grasp the fist with your other hand.
Perform five sharp upward thrusts with the fist.

Alternately perform five fist thrusts and five back blows until the child can breathe again.

If the child loses consciousness immediately call emergency services at 113 and start artificial respiration and heart massage.

In the case of adults the US National Library of Medicine recommends asking: ”Are you choking? Can you talk?” Do not perform first aid if the person is coughing and can talk.

Start by wrapping your arms around the person`s waist. Place your fist just above their navel with the thumb down and grasp the fist with your other hand.
Perform five sharp upward thrusts with the fist.

Continue this movement until the object leaves the airways.

Unfortunately someone will not always be nearby if you happen to choke.

In this case place your fist between your ribcage and navel with the thumb down. Hold the fist with your other hand.
Quickly perform thrusts in an upward direction.

Continue this movement until the object clears the airways.
According to the US National Library of Medicine as an alternative you can use furniture. ”You can lean over the edge of a table chair or railing. With quick thrusts press your upper abdomen against the edge.”

Repeat this maneuver until the airways are cleared.
