We`ll tell you why excessive drooling happens during sleep and what to do about it. You need to pay attention to this!
Why does drooling occur
Very often, the cause of excessive drooling can be illnesses. In this way, our body signals that something is wrong. It seems like a trifle, but it`s important.
1. Runny nose
Let`s start with the simple and obvious. Very often, drooling is due to a runny nose. At night, the nose gets blocked, breathing becomes difficult, and the person opens their mouth. That`s when excessive drooling starts. This problem will resolve itself once the runny nose passes.
2. Infections in the oral cavity
Drooling occurs in cases of oral cavity diseases: inflammation of the mucous membrane and gums, caries, or periodontitis. Proliferating bacteria provoke production and, accordingly, increased saliva secretion. Always remember to properly monitor your dental health.
3. Gastrointestinal tract diseases
Inflammation, increased acidity, bloating – all this causes abundant drooling at night. In such diseases, drooling acts as a protective mechanism: saliva dilutes gastric juice and lowers acidity. These symptoms should not be ignored to avoid leading to cholecystitis or pancreatitis.
4. Helminthiasis
Yes, exactly, it`s not a myth at all. Of course, drooling while sleeping is not a hundred percent guarantee of worms, but they can definitely be present. Worms cause changes in acidity, which, as we already mentioned, promotes abundant drooling. There`s reason to get checked, take tests, or do prevention.
5. Nervous system diseases
The symptom can occur in cases of cerebral circulation disorders, Parkinson`s disease, or trigeminal neuralgia. This phenomenon is also characteristic of syringobulbia, poliomyelitis, vascular pathology, and even oncology.
6. Endocrine system diseases
Abundant drooling can be a peculiar reaction of the neuroendocrine system to some irritant. It can occur as a result of stress or diseases of the endocrine organs (thyroid, pituitary, hypothalamus). Sometimes observed in diabetes.
Very often, drooling at night occurs due to harmful habits. People who use drugs or smokers often suffer from this unpleasant syndrome. There`s only one recipe here – it`s time to quit the bad habit.
Editorial advice
So what to do to get rid of drooling at night? First, we recommend finding out the reasons for its occurrence. If there are no visible reasons, then it`s a serious reason to go to the doctor.
To prevent drooling at night, you can try changing your sleeping position. If you fall asleep on your side, try to train yourself to fall asleep on your back. In case that doesn`t help either, you can try raising the pillow higher. Then the head will be elevated and the mouth won`t open.
It`s important to ensure that the nose isn`t blocked. You can try rinsing the nose or doing inhalations. A hot shower before bedtime helps well, as the steam acts similarly to inhalations.
You need to monitor your health, but don`t raise the alarm if you see saliva on the pillow one morning. Sometimes this can happen if you slept in a deep sleep. It means you completely relaxed and your body stopped controlling the mouth muscles. And that`s not scary at all, but quite the opposite.
