Cinephiles are sharp-eyed and all-knowing people. They can quickly spot mistakes by screenwriters, directors, and even cinematographers. However, the hardest to detect are the costume designers` mistakes. It`s a shame when props in a big-budget film don`t match the era. One thing if it`s off by 20-30 years, but another if by 200-300.
It`s hard to imagine how actors can be dressed in the wrong costume when a huge team of professionals controls the filming process. So let`s take a look together at where the prop masters went wrong.
Continuation of the article
1. `Braveheart`
As strange as it may sound, the Scottish national hero William Wallace never wore kilts. According to historians, this garment appeared only in the 16th century, but the film`s action takes place in 1298.
2. `Django Unchained`
Throughout the film, Jamie Foxx`s character effectively flashes dark glasses, wreaking havoc and breaking the law. The film`s action takes place in 1858, but the first sunglasses appeared in America only in 1929.
3. `Pride and Prejudice`
In the 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen`s novel, we discover several mistakes at once. The action takes place in 1797. In this episode, the girl admires a veiled vestal, one of Mr. Darcy`s statues. The thing is, Raphael Monti would start creating it only in 1846, that is, 50 years later than the events depicted in the film.
But here, Keira Knightley`s character struts in Wellington rubber boots, which appeared 50 years after the novel`s publication.
4. `The Ten Commandments`
The film has many historical inaccuracies, but the most noticeable is Nefertari, Ramses II`s wife, in a bright blue outfit. This color did not exist in nature and could not be created artificially at that time. As for bras – they hadn`t been invented yet.
5. `Dirty Dancing`
Throughout the film, Baby struts in revealing short shorts, which were popular in the 80s. Let`s recall that the events in the film take place in the 60s.
6. `The Aviator`
It`s 1920 outside, but Brad Pitt`s character walks around in proud rimless glasses with thin lenses, even though this accessory appeared only in the 50s.
Howard Hughes` airline name – TWA – was originally deciphered as Transcontinental & Western Air and only from 1950 was called Trans World Airlines. At the time when Hughes is recovering, it still had the old name. Look at the plane now: it shows the new deciphering.
7. `Seabiscuit`
Tobey Maguire`s character often appears on screen in full 1930s jockey gear. However, leather chin straps became part of the uniform only in 1956, and goggles with plastic lenses appeared only after World War II.
8. `American Hustle`
Do you see the watch on Louis C.K.`s wrist? It`s a Rolex GMT-Master II 116718, created in 2010. But neither the actor nor the costume designers took into account that the events in the film take place in the 70s.
9. `Saving Private Ryan`
In the cult film about the heroic landing of American paratroopers in Normandy in 1944, some soldiers wear black boots, which appeared in the US Army only in 1949. Before that, army shoes were made of dyed brown leather.
10. `Amadeus`
Mozart zipping up his clothes with a zipper – a very strange sight, considering it was invented 120 years after the Austrian composer`s death.
11. `Pearl Harbor`
During World War II, no proper American woman left the house without stockings. The film`s prop masters thought that the slender legs of the heroines would look much better without extra clothing items.
12. `300`
No Spartan would go into battle in an uncomfortable, long cloak that restricts movement. Moreover, every soldier wore armor that fully protected the upper body. But if the prop masters had followed historical canons, we wouldn`t see King Leonidas`s magnificent abs.
13. `Catch Me If You Can`
Amy Adams` character looks very cute and childishly naive in modern braces from the 70s. However, the film`s action takes place 10 years earlier. In the 60s, `E-lock` braces in a rigid frame form were popular. Teeth were attached to it in such a way as to expand along an arc.
Why do movie mistakes happen? There can be several reasons: simple carelessness, lack of time for searches or creating the necessary props, unwillingness to sacrifice the film`s splendor. On the other hand, will we love these films any less because of that?
