Initially, this building was constructed as a hotel named Halcyon Hall. It was a chic hotel made of stone and wood. The building was built in the elaborate Victorian style and had 200 rooms over five floors plus a basement. Despite the building`s size, it never gained popularity. The hotel was closed in 1901 and waited for new owners for 8 years.

The Bennett Girls School decided to move into the former hotel in 1907. The school existed for 17 years, with 120 girls from wealthy families studying there.
They studied for 6 years. Four school years and two college years. Here they taught history, languages, and art.
In 1926, the northern side of the building was demolished and a large hall was built in its place. In 1952, half of the building was converted into dormitories. In 1956, a library was added.
In 1970, due to the total modernization of educational buildings, Bennett College was closed. Merger attempts failed and the building became empty again. The library was given to the city.
In 1980, an unsuccessful decision was made to renovate the building, but it collapsed, and in 1993, the house was listed in the national register of historic places. It is said that the city plans to demolish the building and build residential houses in its place.
