Everyone knows this routine: we wake up in the morning, work all day, go to bed after sunset. But it`s not always possible to fall asleep normally, as a result, in the morning we wake up feeling beaten and tired. Fortunately, scientists have discovered the secret of one sleep method that hasn`t been used for many hundreds of years.
Doctors recommend sleeping 8 hours a day, but that doesn`t always help. Several psychiatrists came to the conclusion that modern people are chronically sleep-deprived. As a rule, we need 20 minutes to fall asleep and it`s unlikely that anyone will manage not to wake up late at night!

Biphasic sleep
In 1992, psychiatrist Thomas Wehr conducted a very interesting experiment: he placed a group of people in a completely dark room for a full 14 hours. The experiment lasted about a month.
The subjects slept for 4 hours, then stayed awake for 1-2 hours, then slept another 4 hours..
Sleep history
In 2001, historian Roger Ekirch from Virginia found many historical evidences that people used to sleep in two separate `segments`. Ekirch discovered more than 500 signs of segmented sleep in memoirs, court archives, and medical literature.
Even up to the 1920s, people divided their sleep into two 4-hour periods. Street lighting, indoor electricity, and coffee consumption – 3 important attributes that contributed to the destruction of such a sleep method.
Productivity and sleep are closely related to each other. Two sleep phases directly affect the increase in consciousness, calmness, and productivity. In many countries, for example, Mexico and Thailand, biphasic sleep is a common phenomenon.
Advantages of biphasic sleep

Prolactin – a hormone that lowers stress and anxiety levels, is released during the hour between rest periods. More than a third of Americans wake up at night, read books, meditate, and this promotes their rest and relaxation.
An important part of biphasic sleep is going to bed early. Unlike Thomas Wehr`s study, you will have access to electricity after the sun sets, but our phones, TVs, and laptops really won`t turn off at 11 pm.
Insomnia
Polyphasic sleep, which is more directly related to insomnia, occurs when there are more than two sleep phases, which can lead to not getting enough sleep.
Doctors recommend napping not only for children but also for adults. Usually, this process can be implemented in the middle of the workday. And also, you need to reduce the consumption of caffeine and energy drinks.
Conclusion
Good sleep is one of the most important components of health. We have heard more than once that full and healthy sleep determines how successful our day will be. Be sure to try this method! We hope it helps you!
