At first glance, it seems that simple arithmetic operations with fractions should be easily handled by any middle school student. But in reality, easy examples often prove too difficult even for adults with higher education.

Recently, an exciting experiment was conducted in Japan. Scientists offered people born in the early 90s to solve a simple example. It turned out that out of all the respondents, only 60% answered correctly!

Notably, 30 years ago, exactly the same survey was conducted, and then more than 90% of people successfully coped with this task.

Now we offer you to test your knowledge as well. Look at the arithmetic operation below and solve it. Will you solve this task, or have your school knowledge been thoroughly forgotten?

Well, did you manage the task? Then compare your answer with the correct one!

4 – 2 ÷ 1/2 + 1 = 1

If your answer was 1, then you have wonderfully mastered the school mathematics course!

If you thought the correct answer would be four, then you need to review fraction division. Because 2:1/2=4! But people often forget that in division, the second fraction needs to be inverted, and instead, by habit, they cancel the twos, as is done in multiplication.

But if you got another number, it means it wouldnt hurt you to recall the basics of mathematics. At school, you would get a two!

Yes, it almost feels bad when you realize at what pace elementary school knowledge is forgotten! Test your friends intelligence level and offer them to solve this simple task.
