Better to look back on life and say: “I can`t believe I did that” than to look back and say: “I wish I had done that”.

When my grandmother Zelda passed away at 90, she left me a box of various items from her home, knowing I would keep these things for many years. Among these items, I found her old leather-bound diary, which she called her inspiration journal.

In the second half of her life, she used this journal to jot down ideas, thoughts, quotes, song lyrics, and anything that inspired her. When I was growing up, she would read quotes from her journal, and I would listen and ask questions. Much of who I am today is thanks to my grandmother. She taught me wisdom, love, and kindness when I was still young.

I want to share some of these inspiring quotes with you. I did my best to summarize the journal`s content into 12 points. Enjoy.

1. Inhale the future, exhale the past.

No matter where you are or what you`re going through, always believe there is light at the end of the tunnel. Never expect, assume, or demand. Just do your best, control what you can influence, and then let things happen as they will. Once you`ve done what you can, you`ll get what you want. You`ll see the next step to take toward your goal.

2. Life can be simple.

Just focus on one thing. There`s no need to do everything at once. Breathe, be realistic, and do your best to move forward toward your intentions. What you invest in life comes back to you in greater measure.

3. Let others accept you as you are or not at all.

Speak the truth, even if your voice shakes. When you are genuine, you share your love with the world and change it. So confidently walk your path and don`t expect everyone to support you on your journey, especially if they`re not walking the same path as you.

4. You are not who you used to be, and that`s normal.

You`ve been hurt; you`ve experienced many ups and downs that have made you who you are today. Over the years, so much has happened that changed your views, gave you lessons, and altered your inner world. Some people will tell you that you`ve changed. Reply to them: Of course I`ve changed. That`s what life is about. But I`m still the same person, just much stronger now.

5. Everything that happens helps you grow, even if it`s hard to understand right now.

Circumstances will guide, correct, and perfect you throughout your life. So whatever you do, don`t lose hope. Believe that this is not the end of your story, and in the end, you can get out of any situation.

6. Don`t try to get rich, try to be happy.

Gradually, you`ll start to realize the value of things, not their price. As a result, you`ll understand that the best days are those when you don`t need to do anything unusual or special, when you can just smile and be happy. Live every moment of your life and feel grateful for what you have. That`s true happiness.

7. Approach everything positively.

You are unhappy and suffer mainly not because of circumstances, but because of your attitude toward them. Smile at all those who try to hurt you, show them that their opinion doesn`t interest you.

8. Pay special attention to those who care about you.

Sometimes, when your loved one says: I`m fine, they want you to look them in the eyes, hug them tightly, and say: I know that`s not true. You might think there are people who remember you only when they need you. Don`t worry. On the contrary, feel needed. You are like a lighthouse in the sea to them: light their path when darkness comes into their life.
9. Sometimes you have to let a person go so they can grow.

Just let them go, even if it`s very hard. You gave them a lot and taught them a lot. This helps them become a successful person.

10. Sometimes getting the desired result means losing people who don`t support you.

In this way, you free up space for those who can teach you something new and enhance your best qualities. This happens gradually, according to your growth. You`ll learn who you are and what you want, and then you`ll realize that the people you`ve been communicating with all along can`t keep up with your development pace. You`ll have warm memories of your relationships with these people, but you`ll move on.

11. Better to look back on life and say: I can`t believe I did that than to look back and say: I wish I had done that.

People will always criticize you. Don`t try to please everyone. Live your life, inspire yourself. Do what you like and go where your heart leads. Love yourself so much that you never lower your standards.

12. If you can`t finish something, then it`s time to start something new.

Accept that from time to time you`ll experience failure. This way, you learn. The strongest people are those who laugh heartily at failures and circumstances. These are the people who participate in the toughest struggles. They smile because they`ve decided not to let anything pull them down. In this way, strong people move on to a new stage in their life.
