You know that soul wounds are sometimes very hard to spot, especially for those who don`t even try to do it.

Depression can often remain unnoticed and unrecognized. A person with hidden depression is someone who struggles with their inner demons and tries not to show them to anyone. Such people may be in treatment or not, they may share their condition with loved ones, or they may not. The problem is that the world becomes gloomier if we stop trying to understand each other.

We tend to think that life`s misfortunes are not hidden and that they are as easy to spot as scars left by battles.

But know that mental wounds are sometimes very hard to notice, especially for those who don`t even try to do it.

1. They may deliberately try to look like they`re doing well and even constantly radiate happiness and always be upbeat

If you think that people with depression are always depressed and gloomy folks, then you`re wrong. Depression is not just a bad mood. Those who live constantly suffering from depression can learn to manage their superficial emotions and even be the “happiest” person in your circle, as it seems to you. We are all different. Quite often, people with deep depression control themselves in public and appear quite positive, despite what`s happening in their soul. No one wants to worry others with their problems, even if they have to hide their true feelings.

2. They may take some kind of medication all the time

There are serious methods for treating depression, such as medications and therapy.

But in addition to the medications themselves, there are also daily habits, such as lifestyle. For example, certain music, exercises, walks, basically anything that helps them get out of the black, depressive hole. Hidden depression is truly terrible, especially if a person has to deal with it alone.

3. They may have big problems with breakups

If you`ve ever had depression, then you can understand that it`s a big burden and not only for the person experiencing depression, but also for those nearby. Sometimes, when you let someone get too close and allow them to see your struggle and unhappiness, that person simply leaves. Of course, it`s hard to blame those who leave, but for a person with depression, an ordinary breakup can cause a constant feeling of being abandoned by everyone and a sense of loneliness.

That`s why they often hide depression even from loved ones. There`s nothing more painful than realizing that the dark side of your soul is so terrible that even a loving person can`t look at it.

4. They may make up various stories to cover their actions

This can be anything from cuts on the wrist to refusing lunch. People who live with different types of depression experience many difficulties that can occasionally affect their normal life course. In such cases, they come up with all sorts of excuses to cover the results of their mental pain. Most often, they themselves don`t want to admit that they`re on the edge, so they know perfectly how to hide their condition.

5. They may have strange deviations from eating habits or daily routine

These signs may seem insignificant, but they have serious consequences.

Someone who lives trying to hide their depression sometimes shows only subtle hints of it. Excessive or insufficient sleep is one of the most obvious signs of depression. The same goes for nutrition - if your loved one eats too much or too little, that`s a warning bell. Sleep schedule and diet are the most important health elements. And a person can independently control these elements. Depression creates conditions where a person takes control over themselves. Sleep can be the only way to shut off consciousness and escape pain, or, on the contrary, become an impossible achievement due to obsessive thoughts. The same with food.

6. They may have a different, more serious view of consumer goods

A person struggling with depression knows very well what and how affects their mood.

They know that alcohol is a depressant and if they drink too much, it won`t be possible to cope with their depressed mood and not show it. They also know well that caffeine and sugar can cheer them up, just like prescription antidepressants. And they know perfectly what not to mix with what.

They know all this so well because all the aforementioned changes their mood much more than for people who don`t suffer from depression.

7. They may have very clear but hard-to-understand concepts of life and death

Not everyone with depression has suicidal thoughts. However, depression often provokes thinking about the meaning of life. And a person starts desperately searching for all the answers to life`s questions, realizing that everything inevitably leads to death. Such frequent immersion in serious thoughts can lead to the point where it`s no longer possible to get out of them.

8. They are most often talented and expressive

Many of the artists, musicians, and leaders of our world who inspire us are also affected by this plague called “mental illness.” This depth of emotions that they experience most often appears in their work. They can combine the good and bad parts of the soul in it and show the beauty of life through the shades of emotions they experience.

9. They often seek meaning in something

Everyone wants to have some purpose in life. We want to be sure that everything we do, we do for some good. To be sure we`re going in the right direction.

People with hidden depression want all that too, but with even greater cravings and greater despair. Feelings of fear and inadequacy of what`s happening are nothing new to those whose mind and soul are under the yoke of depression. And very often such people want to somehow compensate for their inner fragility and vulnerability.

That`s why they may change directions they`re going much more often and be incredibly passionate in the search for true, genuine happiness.
10. Sometimes they may show their pain and give a weak hint that they need help.

Even a person who has already adapted to their depression and knows how to live with this burden sometimes needs help. But such cries of despair from people who always seem strong are easy to miss. Sometimes it`s simply dangerous for them to be alone, even if they say otherwise. And if suddenly they manage to open up to you and tell you what`s happening to them, then know that it`s one of the most important moments, exactly such moments create a strong and reliable bridge in your relationships, because it`s impossible to constantly torment yourself and hide your true feelings from your best friend or loved one.

11. They, like all people, seek love and support

Showing the world your soul demons doesn`t mean being dishonest.

People live hiding their depression to find protection. Protection for their hearts and the hearts of those around them.

We live in a world that forces us to hide everything that looks ugly and gloomy. But we don`t have to do that.

And the best thing you can do for people with depression is to understand that they need love and support, just like every person on this earth.

Never turn away from a person who is struggling with themselves. Cry when you want to. Offer a helping hand, even if the door is slammed in your face. Open your soul, despite the fears of being misunderstood. If we continue to not see the bad, then the good will also remain unnoticed.
