The Colombian television series "I Am Betty, the Ugly One" was released more than 20 years ago and instantly captured viewers` hearts around the world. The story of an unconventional but intelligent and hardworking girl gained such popularity that in 2010, the Guinness Book of Records recognized the project as the most successful telenovela in history: it was broadcast in more than 180 countries, dubbed in 25 languages, and had at least 28 adaptations. One of the series` main features, along with a romantic love story, was the protagonist`s impressive transformations (both external and internal).

Colombia
The first ugly woman was Ana Maria Orozco. Her transformation became the ideal prototype for all subsequent adaptations. Undoubtedly, they worked hard on the beautiful actress to make her look like in the first photo.
Germany
The German version of the popular TV series came out in 2005 and was titled ”In Love in Berlin” (”Verliebt in Berlin”). The young, ugly employee at Kerim Moda, who falls in love with her boss, was played by Alexandra Neldel.
Israel
One of the first adaptations of the Colombian project was the 2003 Israeli ”Ugly Esti”. The main role was played by Riki Blich, and to the proven character details (braces, outdated style, unkemptness), they boldly added facial rashes. That`s how the ugly Israeli conquered career heights and the CEO`s heart.
India
The creators of the 2003 Indian version ”Beauty Jassi” (”Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin”) didn`t reinvent the wheel: braces, glasses, outdated clothing - and the charming Mona Singh is unrecognizable.
Russia
The Russian adaptation, released in 2005, was called ”Don`t Be Born Beautiful”. The twists and turns of the relationships between Katya Pushkareva, Andrey Zhdanov, Kira Voropayeva, and other characters hooked viewers so much that they significantly boosted the STS TV channel`s ratings.
USA
The American ”Ugly Betty” has 4 seasons (2006-2010) and is one of the most popular. The project gained not only audience love but also critical acclaim. In 2007, the TV adaptation won the Golden Globe for best series, and the lead actress, America Ferrera, was also honored with this award as the best actress in television.
Mexico
”The Most Beautiful Ugly Girl” was released on Mexican screens in 2006. Angelica Vale played the main character Letty, who suffers from unrequited love for her boss. Angelica, like others, was ”tormented” with braces, glasses, and ridiculous outfits.
Spain
In Spain, the series aired from 2006 to 2009 and became the country`s most watched daytime program. The main role went to Ruth Nunez.
Belgium
The Belgian series ”Sara” also achieved great success at home. Veerle Baetens, transformed into the ugly duckling, received a local TV award as the best actress.
Brazil
One of the latest successful adaptations of the telenovela was the 2009 ”Bella, the Ugly One”. The character who strives to build a career and achieve love despite external unattractiveness was played by Gisele Itie.
